The Pantone Team actively searches general lifestyle and color trends all year long to choose a color of the year. The goal is to communicate a color message that best reflects what is taking place in the world at the time. Having evolved over recent years, the popularity of a color is symbolic of the age we are living in.
Lighting the way to what is yet to come, Ultra Violet is the color of the year for 2018. It’s a blue-based purple that “takes our awareness and potential to a higher level”.
“I see this as very much an optimistic color, an empowering color,” says Pantone Vice President Laurie Pressman. “We want to find some peace and calm within ourselves. How do we quiet our minds?” Even deeper than last year’s color, Greenery, Ultra Violet communicates originality and ingenuity. It portrays a sense of magical, mystical, spiritual, and peaceful state of mind. Leonardo da Vinci wrote that meditation and prayer were “10 times more powerful if done while sitting in the violet light, shining through a stained glass window.”
Ultra Violet is full of inventiveness and imagination, a reflection of what people are looking for. We’re sure to see the peaceful color showing up in home décor, lighting, and wall paint in homes, hotels, and more. Provocative and thoughtful, yet complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet creates a meaningful direction to our future and suggests the mysteries of the cosmos.
