Most major household appliances have been included in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star certification program for years. Clothes dryers have always been excluded from the program because they use more energy than any other appliance. Dryers have recently been added to the program, so that’s great news for homeowners across the country.
Since the middle of February, 45 Energy Star-rated models have become available. These new energy-efficient models will help homeowners save on their energy bills and protect the environment at the same time. Electric, gas, and compact dryers are available in energy-efficient models. Maytag, LG, Kenmore, and Whirlpool are among the manufacturers producing these new units. They all have moisture sensors to detect when the clothes are dry so that the dryer won’t continue to run once the laundry is dry. According to the EPA, this alone reduces the amount of energy used by about 20 percent. LG and Whirlpool are offering models that utilize heat pump technology, which the EPA believes can reduce energy consumption by approximately 40 percent.
