Three questions you need to answer before you remodel your basement or bonus room
If you are looking for more room or square footage in your house, remodeling your basement or bonus room is a great option. In order to keep construction costs down, many homes are not built with all the square footage they could have. However, with a little extra effort, these spaces can be transformed into usable rooms that add value to your home in many ways.
Before you begin the process, I have three questions for you to consider:
1. How do you want this space to be used?
You may want to add a home gym or office. Or maybe you need an extra bedroom or guest suite with a bathroom. These spaces can also make great theater rooms or my personal favorite: man caves. The type of room you are creating greatly impacts what you will need as far as electric and water sources as well as the type of flooring and lighting you will need.
2. What are you working with?
You need to have a professional come in and inspect these spaces to see what kind of insulation, electricity, and plumbing you have in place. Many times in the construction of the homes these spaces can be overlooked or rushed to get the house finished on time. If this space hasn’t been used in a long time, it’s important to check for sagging beams, rotted joists, or water leaks, especially in a basement.
3. Who should you hire?
Websites can be helpful in recommending contractors, but the best recommendations come from trusted family and friends who have successfully completed remodeling projects. Make sure the people you hire are bonded and insured. You may do some parts yourself, but hiring out the parts that require inspections, like electrical and plumbing work, is always a good idea.
