A mashup of blue and violet-red, the warm periwinkle hue is meant to blur the lines between our digital and physical worlds.
PANTONE FORGES A NEW PATH WITH VERY PERI
For the first time since launching the Color of the Year program in 2000, Pantone mixed a brand-new hue for the designation, instead of pulling one from its existing palette. While most major paint brands chose a nature-inspired shade of green—citing our need for calm and comfort at home—for their 2022 top pick, the authority on color read the cultural tea leaves a little differently. According to Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, Very Peri “captures the collective mood of the world.”
With its dynamic, purplish-blue selection, Pantone recognized our changing landscape. “We are living in transformative times,” reads the Institute’s announcement. “PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways.”
